NSW Riders Licence

HOW TO GET YOUR MOTORCYCLE LICENCE.

You must be at least 16 years and 9 months old before you are issued with a learner rider licence. However, you may book into and attend a pre-learner course at the age of 16 years and 6 months. You do not have to hold a driver licence to get a motorcycle licence.

Pre-learner courses

The pre-learner course is held over two days (3.5 hours each day). Motorcycles, helmets, gloves and tuition are provided at the training centre.

The pre learner course is designed for people with no motorcycle riding experience. However, learning to ride a motorcycle requires a high level of balance, co ordination and concentration and not everyone has these skills. If you can ride a bicycle and drive a manual car you probably have the necessary basic skills. If you can not or if it is a long time since you did, you may require time to progress through the training. The training is a competency based course with a pass or fail criteria. You will only be permitted to continue riding if you have passed all of the competencies, in order. For your safety and that of others, the instructor may stop you from riding during the course. If you are stopped from riding, the instructor will advise you of the best way to proceed with your training.

Note: If a scooter is required for training please nominate the type of motorcycle at the time of booking.

After the course

Once you have successfully completed the course, you will be issued with a pre-learner Certificate of Competence (green in colour). A Certificate of Competence is valid for three months from the date of issue.

To get a learner rider licence, go to your nearest motor registry and,

Take your Pre-learner Certificate of Competence.

Take your Pre learner Certificate of Competence.

Take Proof of Identity documents.

Complete an application form.

Pass an eyesight test.

Pass the rider knowledge test. A fee is applicable and a booking may be required (bookings for a knowledge test can now be made from the myrta website and visit the my tests section of this website or by phoning the RTA on 13 22 13).

Pay the licence fee.

You will then be issued with a learner rider licence, valid for 12 months.

RTA Rego checks

Renewing or transferring registration is easy

It’s easy to renew your rego online or by phone. All safety checks (previously pink slip) are sent to the RTA electronically and most new vehicles will not need an inspection until they are over five years old.

Renew your rego online

Renew your rego in three easy steps:

  1. Renew your green slip – most green slips are sent electronically to the RTA by your
insurer. Before you renew - compare green slip prices from ALL insurers with the green
    slip calculator at www.greenslips.nsw.gov.au.
  2. Get an e-Safety check (previously a pink slip) – only needed if your vehicle is more than
five years old*. Check your renewal notice to see if you need one. The term of your CTP
green slip must be the same as the term of your vehicle registration.

    * Light vehicles only. Some exceptions apply. Your renewal notice will indicate if an inspection is required.

  3. Renew your rego online – you'll need to have your Certificate of Registration Renewal
Notice handy. Primary Producers can self declare on myRego but must be able to supply
    appropriate documentation if required.

Unregistered Vehicle Check

Registering a vehicle with expired or cancelled registration

Your vehicle is unregistered if the registration is not renewed by the expiry date.

Expired registration

  • You can only renew your registration up to three months after the expiry date.
  • When you register after the expiry date, your new registration starts from the date you make the payment, but the expiry will remain the same - you will not get a full year of registration.

For example, if your registration expires on 1 August, and you don't renew until 1 October, your next registration renewal will be due on 1 August the following year.

  • You can choose to cancel your current registration and then re-register your vehicle. This will allow you to purchase a full year of registration from the date of payment.
  • For more information, see expired registration

Cancelled Registration

  • Your registration will be cancelled if your registration is not renewed up to three months of the expiry date.
  • If your registration is cancelled by the RTA, you must re-register your vehicle.
  • For more information, see cancelled registration
